Book Review: The Reckoning

Some books are for pure entertainment, but The Reckoning by John Grisham is a work of art, and a story that will always stick with you. It tells the story of a man named Pete Banning, a decorated war hero, prominent member of the community, father, farmer, and a faithful member of the Methodist church.

One morning, he drives into town and commits a shocking crime. His only statement in court is, “I have nothing to say.” He has been through a lot in his lifetime and is not afraid of death. He has come close to it too many times. Like “any good Banning,” he plans to take his secret to the grave, or so he thinks.

Grisham is a well known and well liked thriller and mystery writer, and it’s for a good reason. The Reckoning is unique. I have never read anything like it. Just when you think you have the story figured out, Grisham adds twist after twist, until the truth is finally revealed. The story keeps you interested from cover to cover, and is easily one of the best books I have ever read.
